Program Description: The Online Principles of Childhood Development II Certificate provides 10 clock hours of professional development for early childhood professionals in basic child development. The Certificate Program focuses on the growth and development of children from birth to five years old.

Program Objectives: Upon satisfactorily completing the Online Principles of Childhood Development II Certificate students should be able to:

  • Explain the responsibility of the early childhood educator in promoting children’s physical fitness
  • Identify the stages of physical and social development in young children
  • Identify the various ways excessive television viewing affects brain development and leads to health problems in young children
  • List the developmentally appropriate components of learning centers in an early childhood setting
  •  List ways to adapt learning centers for children with various disabilities
  •  Identify techniques teachers can use to help with stress
  •  Demonstrate the ability to implement positive guidance techniques in the early childhood classroom
  •  Understand why it is important for teachers to assess young children

Student Assessment: Students enrolled in the Online Principles of Childhood Development II Certificate are assessed using the following methods:

  • Competency based multiple-choice questions
  • End of Course Quizzes in multiple-choice format – Students must pass each quiz with a grade of 70% or better to complete the course.
  • Cumulative Final Exam in multiple choice format – Students must pass with a grade of 70% or better to complete the certificate program.

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have access to a computer and printer
  • Must have a valid email address
  • Must have access to the Internet through a JavaScript enabled web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, Mozilla Firefox, etc.)
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write well enough in the language the course is presented in to understand and complete the course material
