As a new school year begins, September offers an exciting opportunity to re-invent and liven up learning centers in the classroom. Learning centers provide a wonderful opportunity for teachers to actively engage children in meaningful, hands-on activities. Well-planned learning stations present children with challenging projects and opportunities for exploration which encourage thinking skills and motor development.
When planning learning centers, many teachers find it helpful to focus on a unit theme. For example, an “Under the Sea” theme may include a book center with stories about sea life, sailing, or the beach. Teachers may add sailor hats, snorkels, and flippers to the dramatic play center. Using this theme, a teacher may choose to incorporate an art project using sea shells and sand. Unit themes often correspond with curriculum for maximum impact.
When refreshing learning centers, it is important to gradually introduce new materials. This prevents children from becoming overwhelmed by new items and allows them to focus on play with new items. Focused play leads to higher order learning and an opportunity to develop or sharpen skills in a particular area. By rotating materials, teachers ensure that the centers remain fresh. Rotation also allows teachers to provide learning centers which focus on developing separate and distinct skill sets.
